Bruce Martell

Registered Massage Therapist - Cordova Bay & James Bay

Areas of Expertise:

Chronic Pain, stress/anxiety, Sports Injuries.

Bruce’s career started in 2006 after graduating from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in Victoria. He was drawn to this profession through his lifelong love of sport. As a kid, he played as many sports as he could, and when he wasn’t playing an organized sport, he was off running through the neighboring forest, climbing trees, or exploring on his bike.

His vision became clear: to find work that would help support his desire to stay fit and healthy for life, sport and adventure. What better way to do this than pursue a career in this amazing profession and learn more about the miraculous workings of the human body.

Over the years his practice has evolved from a biomechanical model of pain to a biopsychosocial one. This approach looks at the complex interaction between the biological, psychological and social factors that underlay pain. It has led to a paradigm shift in how he thinks and feels about pain, and consequently how he treats patients with pain.

With this in mind, his goals for treatment have become clearly defined. The patient’s comfort is always paramount. He provides a safe and calming environment, and listens attentively to each individual’s story without judgment. Along with educating his patients, he uses a variety of techniques to try to decrease any perceived threat to the nervous system and utilize science-based best practices to treat the neurophysiology of pain. His patients always leave feeling like they’ve been worked on, without feeling like they’ve been worked over.

When Bruce isn’t treating patients, he can be found playing with his two young boys (aka the two terrors) and hanging out with his beautiful wife. And, when the universe allows it, he’ll be out running, mountain biking, and playing basketball.

Over the past 8 years that Bruce has been treating me he has helped me immensely. Bruce has the rare ability to individualize massage treatments based on the questions he asks at the beginning of each session, taking the time to listen to what you say. He also has a professional approach that leaves you feeling comfortable and well taken care of.
